Rethinking Homelessness: The Manitoba Homelessness Prevention Summit
April 22 and 23, 2010Turtle Island Neighbourhood Centre510 King StreetThe Manitoba Homelessness Prevention Summit will bring together key sectors to begin a dialogue on homelessness, by providing an opportunity to:
â—� Share experiences,
â—� Develop a better understanding,
â—� Build a sense of shared responsibility, and
â—� Collaborate on intersectoral strategies.
The Summit will include speakers from Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto, who will share their experiences in addressing homelessness. In addition, a variety of workshops and tours will be offered to enable participants to learn more about homelessness in Manitoba and the ways it is being addressed.
Registration is free but space is limited, so you are encouraged register as soon as possible.

April 12-14 | Newcomer workshops on housing
New Journey Housing will be presenting the following workshops for newcomers to Canada. Please call 942-2238 to sign up for the workshops you want to attend. These workshops will be held at New Journey Housing 312-393 Portage Ave. 3rd floor of Portage Place near IMAX Theatre.
1. Budgeting Workshop Monday, April 12 1:00 PM 3:00 PMThis session encourages people to look closely at what money is coming into the home and where it is being spent. It encourages people in a home to work together to get what they need with the money available.
2. Rental Workshop Wednesday, April 14 10: AM – 12:00 PMthis session will give information about many rental issues that newcomers face. Rights and responsibilities of tenants and Landlords. What is the Residential Tenancies branch and how can it help newcomers?
Those who attend this workshop will receive a certificate that can be given to potential landlords as a way of encouraging landlords to accept them as tenants even if they do not have a rental history or references.
3. Home Ownership Workshop Wednesday, April 14 5:30 PM – 7:30 PMThis workshop talks about the positive and negatives of owning your own home. What is a mortgage - how do you get one? How does a mortgage work. What other costs should you be prepared for? Information about low income homeownership possibilities in Winnipeg will be presented.

March 14-19 | 5 Days for the Homeless
Five commerce students at the I.H. Asper School of Business are preparing to live without a roof over their heads for 120 hours, part of the school's "5 Days for the Homeless" fundraising and awareness campaign. The event runs from March 14 to March 19.
